Family Therapy

In today's world, families face unique stressors that can challenge the harmony of the family unit. When our family life is tense, stressed, or conflicted it affects our whole world. Family therapy focuses on the family as a whole and works towards creating a family environment that is more stable and peaceful.

Who Can Benefit from Family Therapy?

Anyone who experiences stress and conflict within the family can benefit from family therapy. In some cases, one member of the family is identified as the person needing support. Family therapy can help address the concerns of individuals by focusing on the functioning of the family system.

Family therapy has been successful in many different situations, including:
Parental conflict
Children with behavior or school problems
Parent-child conflict
Sibling rivalry
Life-threatening or chronic illness
Death in the family
Family relocation
Military deployment or extended absences
Addiction or mental health condition

Family therapy can also be useful before problems begin. Some families seek therapy when they anticipate a major change in their lives. For example, family therapy can be very helpful if you are anticipating blending two families together.

How Does Family Therapy Work?

Family therapy is a very active type of therapy that is solution-focused. During therapy, the family is viewed as a sysem and the strengths of the family are emphasized when addressing concerns.

Dr. Perper will help you explore your family's ability to solve problems and express thoughts and emotions. You may discuss family roles, rules, and behavior patterns that contribute to the conflict and outline ways to work through these issues. Your family will learn how to best support one another and develop patterns of relating that foster a sense of understanding and togetherness.
